Why Clean Your Gutters at all?
“Prevention is better than cure”
When gutters get blocked water flowing down the roof has no where to go, it builds up in the gutters and flows over the edge. The inside edge is the lower edge – this means water flows into your roof cavity, sitting on top of your ceilings and running down interior & exterior walls. This water can cause expensive damage and create major electrical and fire hazards.
Vermin
Rotting debris and the moist climate generated inside gutters is a perfect place for vermin to live and breed, not to mention the health hazards generated from stagnant water sitting in blocked gutters.
Corrosion
Gutters containing debris harbour dampness and create the perfect environment for corrosion of your gutters, basically keeping them clean is keeping them dry and free from potentially damaging moisture.
"Clean Water In Your Tank"
Clean gutters means clean water in your tank and more water in your tank. Any blockages means you loose valuable water over the edge of your gutters and not in your tank. Clean water in your tank also means less filter and pump maintenance. Lengthening the life of your water harvesting equipment.
Insurance Property managers are aware of the importance of gutter cleanliness, but for those of us that are not, here is some very valuable information:
If a house suffered fire or water damage due to blocked gutters, insurance will simply not pay out. Gutter Cleaning is an integral part of any property’s maintenance.
Why Gutter Guard is NOT the Answer
After 17 years of cleaning gutters, 12 of which installing gutter guard, we have realised that the cost benefit of gutter guard is in the negative. The plastic type system holds sticks and debris in place accelerating the blocking process creating premature blockages. While finer expensive types that screw onto your gutters and or roof require cleaning less often when they do need to be cleaned the cost is almost the same as original instillation. No gutter guard will stop pollution soot, dust, fine particles and seeds from entering the gutter.

Within 12 to 18 months a sludge builds up in the gutter, the shadow that the gutter guard casts doesn’t let water evaporate and the result is thick green moss and sludge that not only blocks up, but overloads the gutters weight bearing capacity. We have also found, the screws used to install these types of gutter guard compromise the rust proofing integrity of the roof and gutters as well as causing bi-metallic corrosion on aluminium gutters.
Why We Don’t Vacuum Gutters?
Simply put: Vacuum hoses damage roofs. As gutter cleaners over the years we have put many vehicle and trailer mounted vacuums to the test. After all, cleaning gutters is our business. These are our findings:
- Gutter vacuum hoses damage roofs, the vibration combined with the weight of water and debris flowing through the hose, rubs off colour, compromises rust protection (on colourbond & steel roofs) and loosens pointing, ridges and barges on tiled roofs.
- Won’t suck up a large portion of Australian fauna ( woody twigs, bark etc.) & caked dirt.
- Using gutter vacuum systems take longer than manually cleaning and require a lot of expensive maintenance. Making it much less cost effective for the customers, and our business.
“It is for these reasons vacuuming gutters is no longer a part of our procedures”
How Do We Clean The Gutters?
Firstly, we place a soft ladder bracket over your gutter to protect your gutter from our ladder this saves scratching or bending the gutter when using the ladder.
Secondly, we install the appropriate “fall arrest system” for our safety and to honour our OH&S obligations (this is an un obtrusive rope system that does not damage your roof in any way – all our staff are fully trained in their use).
Thirdly, we manually remove all debris from your roof, valley iron, gutters and down pipe collars and place it in bags, which are then brought down the ladder and placed in our truck.
Any mess is cleaned up and the site is left clean.
Certain sites and conditions require other methods such as back pack blowers.
